Solo Paddle South of Goat Rock, April 28th 2002.

I could not find anyone to go kayaking with me, so I went out on my own. This turned out to feel more uncomfortable than I expected! I used to kayak everywhere solo but since becoming active in BASK I almost always find someone to share the beauty of the ocean with. This is considered a good thing, having another pair of eyes to watch the ocean and someone to help get you out of trouble. So I felt a little guilty going out solo again!

I launched behind Goat Rock and headed south through the big arch. The waves were a little rough and I declined going too close to shore. When I got as far south as Wrights Beach, I looked through The Crack in the Hogback. This is a narrow channel through the middle of a rock and it can get really rough in there. Nervous about being out on the ocean solo again, I declined the ocean’s invitation of a wild ride through The Crack and turned back to my car.
