A group of kayakers, the usual suspects, met to go surfing in Bolinas. When I arrived I walked down to look at the ocean and the waves were pitiful! A few people talked about giving it up and going home but we went out to give it a try in the shallow spot north of Brighton Street. There I was able to get a few rides in my Coaster but the people in shorter boats worked very hard for not much return. Eventually everyone gave up and we started to head back to the ramp.
Dave Littlejohn was one of the people in a short boat, his VERY SHORT boat designed just for surfing. I assume he must have been very frustrated and this made him susceptible to my suggestion that we try out the waves at the mouth of the lagoon. The tide was starting to ebb so water was flowing out of the lagoon making this a bad place to get in trouble. But waves were breaking there and we decided to try it out. Nobody else came with us.
When we got to the mouth we found the best waves of the day, some of the best I have ever found at Bolinas! The waves were not that large but long before they broke they felt powerful and smooth, giving our boats a strong shove. Dave and I had a great time and got more rides in a short time than everyone else got earlier in the day.
I was a little worried about the ebb tide and I wanted to catch up with everyone else in time to have lunch with them at a local restaurant, so I convinced Dave to quit the waves and follow me back to shore.
