Baja Dessert Camp to San Diego, December 31st 2001.

We drove north the rest of the way out of Baja with only a few stops. We stopped for gasoline a few times of course. We stopped for lunch at a small “family style” place. And we stopped at the Gigante Super Mercado in Encenada. I told John that stopping there was a cultural experience not to be missed, and he agreed. I bought a bottle of Tequila, not because I like the liquor all that much but because it seems a shame to cross the border without some. I also stocked up on mango flavored Tang, which is not available in the USA. We drove through Tijuana, not at 20% of the speed of light but fast enough to get to the border with no hassles. There was, of course, the usual hassle of waiting in line for an hour jockeying for position to get into the USA again. The line we ended up in moved at 20% the speed of the lines on either side because the guy manning our booth insisted on looking in the trunk of every car. The inspector in the booths on either side of us did not do this. We did make it back to San Diego in time to join some friends of John’s for dinner. We stayed up until midnight (HAPPY NEW YEAR!) telling tall tales about the dangerous experiences we had paddling the wild Sea of Cortez in Baja.
