Wood Point to Spurt Point Cabin, June 25th 2005.

In the morning we prepared for a short paddle across Thomas Bay to stay in the Forest Service "Spurt Point Cabin". After all the trouble we had finding camping spots above the high tide we thought that finding a cabin with ocean views would be easy. The directions said that this cabin was in a cove next to Spurt Point. The point is obvious but there was no cabin in the cove next to it. I got out of my kayak and bushwhacked up to the top of the point to see if I could spy the roof of the cabin nearby. No luck. There were a couple other coves several miles farther north around the point and a group went there to look. Eventually they called me on the VHF radio to say that they found the cabin several coves away.

Once found the cabin was very nice with four bunk beds inside and a large deck for our overflow. There was a trail behind the cabin that lead past a "beaver pond" in the woods. The trail was lined with blueberry bushes heavily laden with fruit. We took this as a good sign that there were no bears in the neighborhood. John decided to set his tent up on the ground in front of the cabin and Joe Petolino set his up behind the cabin. The rest of us fit inside, but early in the evening Don Fleming was unable to sleep because of the snoring coming from the rest of us resonating inside the wooden walls. He set his tent up on the front deck and slept there to escape the noise.
