Layover Day at Big Flat, September 4th 2005.

The rest of us spent most of Sunday lazing about as well. I set up my parabolic tarp to cast some shade in the middle of the day and everyone appreciated having someplace to sit out of the sun. Several of us went for a short walk on the trail up into the valley above Miller Flat. Lucy O'Brien tried out the "best surf break in Humboldt County". Watching her surf in nasty breaking waves in shallow water over rocks convinced most of us to forego the pleasure. Only Marty Short was brave enough to try it out. We watched his boat pearl and hit bottom nose first then stand up on end and flip over. The water was so shallow that soon we saw Marty standing in the white water next to his boat. He pulled his boat to shore around the point were we could not see him for a long time. Several of us went for a walk to check up on him. But about the time we got there he finally found a window in the waves to launch through. He paddled his boat back to camp since he also seemed to have had his fill of surfing.
