Jailhouse to Dynamite Beach, May 24th 2007.

My bosses were all away at a trade show so I didn’t have to do the regular trip down to our main office on Thursday. This meant that I could get to one of John Boeschen’s ThursEve paddles! He emailed instructions to meet at Jailhouse Beach, which is his pet name for the public beach near the San Quentin Prison. I met everyone there and dressed up for the evening. I want to be comfortable and dry and warm for these evening paddles, but the temperatures are starting to get summery and my drysuit is a bit too warm. I decided to put it on anyway and practice my roll if I got too hot. Dashing around getting ready to launch had me sweating and ready to do my first two rolls as soon as we got off the beach. I hung upside down in my kayak and relaxed for long seconds before coming back upright.

We paddled under the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, past east Marin Island, and landed at Dynamite Beach near the Point San Pedro Quarry. Here the tide has deposited a huge slab of wood in exactly the right orientation to use as a picnic table. It must have been part of a dock somewhere that broke off and drifted away.

Dinner included BBQ beef with horseradish sauce, pot stickers with soy sauce, broccoli with plum sauce, green salad with dressing, red and white wine. I steamed the broccoli with local rocks to create a steaming rack in the bottom of the pot. This of course prompted John to accuse me of cooking stone soup for dinner. Dessert was loquats, strawberries and a bar of Ghirardelli chocolate called “Twilight Delight” which I thought was the perfect name for chocolate served on a beach as the sun went down.

After enough time enjoying a campfire on the beach, we started back in the dark. When we landed the sprinkler system was on, watering the lawn above Jailhouse Beach. In my drysuit I could stand in the lawn for a few minutes and wash some of the salt off before changing back into dryer clothes and heading home.
