Jenner Coves, August 19th 2007.

To try out my new Yukon kayak, I went for a solo paddle out of Goat Rock State Beach. This time I headed north to go rock gardening in the caves and coves north of Jenner. I had a family event to go to and had to get back early. However the Yukon made better time than I expected and I made it all the way north to Lost Beach before half of my time was up.

I am leading some friends to Lost Beach to set up the driftwood fired hot tub one day soon, so I was curious to see if our hidden supplies were undisturbed. They were still where I had cached them, but another problem presented itself. The “creek” (more properly called a seep) that we had used to supply water for the tub had run almost dry! I hiked down to the old site where Jerry Albright used to set up the tub and that creek still had lots of water. Since the last time we had used this location there had been a landslide and climbing the cliff next to the creek was very precarious. Climbing will be necessary to install the siphon hose to run the plumbing on the tub.

All this climbing and hiking back and forth used up all my spare time and I had to sprint back to Goat Rock and jump in my car to make it to my appointments. The Yukon does not do well going in a straight line at speed but I’m getting better at keeping it pointed where I want. I got this boat for maneuvering between rocks so I don’t need it to go straight but it is nice to know I can force it to that in a pinch.
