Evening Rock Garden Paddle, July 1st 2008.

Two BASK members, Bill Vonnegut and Roger Medler, were camping on the Sonoma coastline on Tuesday and indicated they would join me for an evening paddle if I had one. I decided to do a second evening paddle in one week and accommodate them. Donna Fabiano and Don Barch were also available and we all met at Goat Rock State Beach.

The waves coming in at Blind Beach were a little daunting or a little fun if you had time for surfing. However, we launched over them with no problems. We paddled out to and through the big arch off Blind Beach and continued south. In the rocky areas of the shoreline we were able to get close to shore and behind the rocks, except in the places where the low tide made the water too shallow. The rocks in front of Shell Beach are a particularly nice place to poke around. A little farther south we rounded the last rock and looked at the long stretch of sand in front of Wright’s Beach. With no more rock gardens to play in we turned back.

We were able to take our time on the trip back because I found a local restaurant, Cafe les Jumelles in Monte Rio, that is open until 10:00 PM. The five of us landed at Goat Rock, put away our gear and made it in time for a very nice meal.
