Puerto San Andres to San Javier, August 24th 2011.

I got up and ready to launch at 6:30 AM this morning. Just off the next point was an island covered with California Sea Lions. Biggest colony of them I have ever seen in Mexico. From a distance I saw a square object on the island. Did someone build a cinderblock house on this forsaken place? So close to the water? I figured it would turn out to be a natural formation but as I approached it got blockier and more regular looking. I think it is the foundation of an old lighthouse.

When I rounded the point I could look across the bight at the big town of Santa Rosaliita. This town has a little breakwater and a harbor. I needed nothing so I kept going and didn't consider landing. Instead I headed straight on a long crossing to Punta Rosarito. It was a foggy day and difficult to stay on track without my compass. Punta Rosarito had waves breaking far out from it so I stayed offshore. On the point was a big house. Very remote from anything. This makes me doubt my fantasies about living somewhere here.

I came around Point Javier early looking at all the possibilities. My goal was a beach seen only on Google Maps, would it work? Yes! It was perfect! Offshore rocks on the west end protected a little patch of sand. I surfed mild waves in there for a landing. Then set up camp on the rocky berm. OK, it wasn't perfect since there was no shade from the afternoon sun or better shelter from the wind. I went for a walk up the valley above camp and found one agave plant growing a giant asparagus stalk. I looked around and realized that all the rest of the agaves I could see in all directions were either to young to have a stalk, or had already flowered and died.
