San Javier to Punta Santo Domingo, August 25th 2011.

I didn't think of this until after I launched, but I knew that it was only 8 miles past the next camp to the entrance of the Guerrero Negro Lagoon. I started thinking about making this a long day and ending the trip a day early. There lots of good reasons, like not camping on another sandy beach, getting into town in time for a restaurant meal and a margarita... So I worked hard and arrived at Punta Santo Domingo just after lunch time. Plenty of time to go another eight miles. The point was made of spectacular sharp black volcanic basalt. I slowed down to take some pictures before starting the second long paddle of the day.

But then I had a conversation with my GPS. Sure the entrance to the lagoon was only 8 miles away, but then I had to navigate the corkscrew channel through it, the canal into the center of town, the last three kilometers on the road to the hotel where my car was parked. The GPS said that the other end of the canal was 19 miles away, not counting the corkscrew channel. Although the beach I was to cam on here was sandy, it had a big lighthouse above it that I could go explore. I decided to camp one more night out here after all. I hiked up to the top of the point and explored the lighthouse. I stayed up for a sunset and saw meteors coming out from near Orion. It was an enjoyable afternoon and I'm glad I chose to stay here.
