Hornby to Vancouver Island, June 11th, 2015.
I have been very pressed for time: Paddling for long hours, unpacking, setting up camp and making dinner (most nights). The sun does not go down until after 9:00 so I find myself going to bed late then getting only 4 hours of sleep before I have to get up, get dressed, break camp, make breakfast and start paddling again. I gave myself the luxury of sleeping in for an extra hour and got 5 hours of sleep this evening. So I din't launch until 6:00 AM. I saw river otters fishing around Hornby Island. On this trip I only saw sea otters twice in 3 weeks, but I often saw river otters.
The wind was not blowing too bad in the morning and I made the last two crossings for a while. I would be hugging the shore of the main Vancouver Island for a few days here. With a NW wind I should have been able to duck out of the wind but it perversely turned to come from the north. Then it grew stronger and stronger and slowed me down. I slogged on for a while but decided to land early in a remote area where the camping was good. I found a high spot in the gravel behind a pile of logs and rocks. Stopping early got me farther behind schedule, but I knew I could use a few more hours of sleep.
